Israel Temple CME Church in Jackson, Georgia, was established in 1867 by formerly enslaved individuals who left the white Methodist Church South to form their own congregation. Originally meeting under a brush arbor, the historic congregation built its current sanctuary in 1891, marking a significant, enduring presence in the Black community.
Due to rapid growth, the present sanctuary was built and completed in 1891, with the cornerstone laid by members who provided labor and funds.
Located on E. First Street, Israel Temple CME remains one of the oldest and most significant African American congregations in Butts County, Georgia.
